When to go to Reykjavík & the Golden Circle

Geysers, waterfalls and the northern lights from a small capital.

Reykjavík is a compact, colourful capital that acts as a base for Iceland's dramatic geology — geysers, waterfalls and volcanic craters all within a couple of hours' drive. Winter brings the northern lights and geothermal pools that steam in sub-zero air; summer brings nearly endless daylight.

Good to know

  • Rent a car for the Golden Circle and South Coast — public transport barely reaches these sights.
  • Check an aurora forecast app and get away from city lights; clear, dark skies matter more than the exact season.
  • Tap water is excellent and free everywhere — don't bother buying bottled water.
