When to go to Goa

Portuguese churches, palm-lined beaches and India's easiest holiday pace.

Goa runs on two speeds: North Goa's party beaches and beach clubs, and South Goa's quieter stretches of sand backed by coconut groves. Four centuries of Portuguese rule left whitewashed churches and a food culture built on vinegar, pork and seafood found nowhere else in India.

Good to know

  • Rent a scooter only if you're comfortable riding one — an international license is technically required and checked at times.
  • North Goa is for nightlife and beach clubs; South Goa is for quiet and yoga — decide which trip you want before booking a hotel.
  • Carry small cash for beach shacks; card readers are inconsistent outside the bigger towns.
